Author Bio

Charles Schumann was born Karl Georg Schuhmann in 1941 in Bavaria. After training with Germany's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he attended a school of hotel management in Switzerland. At the age of 30, he moved to the south of France, worked in various clubs and nightclubs and studied French at the University of Montpellier. In the summer of 1973, Charles – the name he was given while in France – returned to Munich and became a barkeeper in that city's legendary Harry's New York Bar. In 1982 he opened his own establishment, Schumann's American Bar. In the meantime, the bar has become known simply as Schumann's Bar after moving to larger quarters in Munich's elegant Odeonsplatz where it celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2012. Charles Schumann has also worked as a model for Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garcons, and most recently Baldessarini, Hugo Boss's luxury men's-wear line.
